The Long Beach Guide.

Long Beach, California · told by the crew that's held its corner since 2010

Long Beach started as Willmore City in the 1880s, renamed itself for its long, wide beaches, and spent 1902 to 1910 as the fastest-growing city in America · a seaside resort town riding the Pacific Electric trolley. Then, on June 23, 1921, the Alamitos No. 1 well blew a gusher over Signal Hill, and everything changed: oil money built Downtown at a million dollars a month, and by 1923 California was pumping a quarter of the world's oil.

The 1933 earthquake knocked the city down; it rebuilt in the Art Deco that still lines its streets. Douglas Aircraft built the WWII air fleet here, Howard Hughes flew the Spruce Goose over the harbor in 1947, and in 1967 the Queen Mary sailed in for good. Since 1975 the Grand Prix has turned Downtown into the country's biggest street race every April.

Today it's a port city with a poet's résumé: home of Snoop Dogg, Sublime, Warren G and Vince Staples, the largest Cambodian community outside Southeast Asia, a deep skate lineage, and one of the world's busiest harbors. That mix · working-class, global, creative - is the culture this shop comes from.

The LBC that made the LBC
The sound

Eastside Long Beach gave the world Snoop Dogg; Sublime formed here in 1988 and wrote the city into ska-punk history; Warren G and Nate Dogg's "Regulate" era, and Vince Staples' North Long Beach storytelling carry it forward. The 562 has its own frequency.

Along Anaheim Street sits the officially designated Cambodia Town · the heart of the largest Cambodian community outside Southeast Asia, with the April parade, Khmer restaurants, and a culture that makes Long Beach unlike anywhere else in America.
